NEW ROME UNIVERSITY

Tasks Accomplished

  • Designed the logos for the university
  • Designed the seal for the university
  • Designed the branding guide
  • Created concepts for stationary items/media
  • Created concepts for merchandise

For a practice project, I decided to make a branding guide for the fictional New Rome University, a location from Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson/Half-Blood books. Using details from the books I created the basic designs for a university. A set of logos, a seal, stationary, a branding guide, and merchandise.

OFFICIAL LOGO

The official logo features a laurel wreath and the university’s name in Trajan as a logotype. I chose Trajan based on the Roman name and its readability. The wreath being a long symbol of knowledge and power in Rome felt appropriate for a university. The logo also uses the official colors from the books, the primary color being gold and a secondary purple color. Both being contrasting colors of success, wisdom, and royalty, they make for a unique design.

SPECIFIC LOGO

The specific logo features the official logo with an added subhead; featuring a specific department of the university. This form of secondary branding is for communications among the staff and students.

ALTERNATIVE LOGOS

For merchandise and other media, I also created some alternative logos. I made an NRU acronym logo in mind for a favicon for social media profiles. Featuring the laurel wreath and the university’s initials in Trajan. As well as a version of the official logotype without the wreath.

SEAL

The seal features the New Rome University library, Latin text reading Prosperitas Pro Populo (Prosperity For The People), and the official gold and purple colors. In the books, the library is described as a domed building with columns out front, similar to the Roman Pantheon. I wanted to make something meaningful for the seal, libraries are a long-time symbol of teaching and knowledge so it felt appropriate to have it as an important symbol of the University.

STATIONARY ITEMS

For stationary items, I used the official and specific logos to create a business card, letterheads, envelopes, and an email template. Including examples of the body copy dimensions, including an area for signatures, and what typeface and fonts to use with them.

MERCHANDISE

Using a mix of logos, I made some mockups of merchandise. I knew the official logo wouldn’t work in every situation, so I used the NRU alternative and Logotype for diversity, and to show the options of how they can be applied.
