BBQN’ MAGAZINE

Tasks Accomplished

  • Designed the logo for the magazine
  • Designed the spreads and cover of the magazine
  • Designed an app for the magazine
  • Designed a website for the magazine
  • Created advertisements for web media
  • Created concepts for merchandise

For my final project in my Magazine and Media Design class, I was assigned to create a 24-page magazine, advertisements, a webpage, merchandise, and an app (which was used in my Interactive Design Class as well). I chose to do a food magazine as I could have more freedom to create unique pages and spreads. As well as to include a wider array of content, including advertising an app, advertising cooking supplies, and more. Since I took this project beyond print media, I had to create a consistent theme that could work for both print and screen uses.

LOGO/MASTHEAD

BBQ is known for its bold flavors, slab serif fonts are known for their bold look, and often stand out against others. I used the Alfa Slab One typeface but altered it to appear taller for the desired appearance. The elongated tail from the ‘Q’ and lowercase ‘n’ was to resemble food on a grill. I used DejaVu Sans to create the masked out ‘magazine’ subhead.

COVER

The cover features an image of a pitmaster carving ribs. The coverline text uses Alfa Slab and DejaVu Sans to stick with consistency. The orange coverlines were taken from an eyedropper swatch of the ribs. The bold orange color is used to make the reader hungry, ready to use the recipes inside themselves.

RECIPE SPREADS

For the recipes, I used images with a low opacity black layer atop them to make the title pop out. The ‘Ingredients’ uses Alfa Slab One for the subhead and DejaVu for the table copy, combined with the orange color to add consistency. The instructions feature Alfa Slab for eye-catching look, and to easily track along the page.

INTERVIEW SPREADS

To continue with the bold, large picture themes, I featured the images on the left side, a pull quote, and the name of the interviewee. The interview body is featured on the right side, with added cutout images relating to the story.

MAGAZINE ADVERTISEMENTS

I made ads that would appear in most cooking magazines, promoting equipment, and other foods. I also decided to create a page solely for the app. Featuring appropriate, simple messages, and images to get the point across to readers.

WEBSITE

Following consistency, I stuck with the orange color, and the previous two typefaces. The landing page features a slider bar advertisement, large image hyperlinks for articles and recipes, and a custom icon for the profile, resembling a pitmaster.

APP

In collaboration with my Interactive Design Class, I created an app for BBQn’ Magazine. The app is to serve as a digital magazine, allowing you to view user-submitted recipes, featured articles, and more. Sticking with the orange color and use of DejaVu Sans, as well as using Alfa Slab One for consistency in the brand.

WEB ADVERTISEMENTS & MARKETING

I created an example of a web banner ad featuring the magazine in a print mockup, as well as motivational text to purchase the magazine for its contents. I also created a concept for a subscription email blast to promote and inform readers of the new issue coming out.
